Web Page Browsing from Within Notebook

    Hi All,

I put together this little flash object because I wanted to dynamically enter a web page url from within Notebook to jump directly to a web site that was given to me by participants of my workshop. Couldn't find one in the gallery.

I wanted to enter the url from Notebook, but be able to change the url on the fly.  The only way I was able to do it was create an object and then link to the object beforehand or open up the browser and then enter the url.  That was sucking up valuable seconds of my workshop.

Not anymore.   This resizeable flash object does the trick.  You can get an idea of how it works by looking at the swf file here.

    http://www.teachinghacks.com/files/Browser.swf

Please right click and download SWF file.  (Can't seem to post files here) And Import Flash into Notebook, then drag to your Gallery. It looks much better when it is smaller.

This Flash Object is licensed by Quentin D'Souza under - http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.5/ca/

    Enjoy,

    QD

    To Bring Into Notebook
    1. Right-Click on http://www.teachinghacks.com/files/Browser.swf   and select 'Save Target As" and place on your desktop
    2. Open up Smart Notebook
    3. In Notebook - Select from Insert Menu "Flash File" and then locate the "Browser.swf" on your desktop
    4. Drag the SWF in your Notebook file to your Gallery.

    To Use:

    1. Click on the Browser to Activate it
    2. Enter the url and select enter.
    3. Default Web Browser Opens to the Web Page You Entered.
    Enjoy

    Hey Quentin,

Unfortunatley the browser doesn't load on mac, the webpage opens in the flash browser, which is kind of neat since the web page is then embedded directly in the notebook page, unfortunately due to the aspect ratio it's a bit unusable, I'll email you a mac version, perhaps you could put that on your site for our mac users?

    Cheers

     Hello Joe,

Do you know if I can find the Mac version already somewhere?

And do you think it's possibe to create a Mac/Linux/Windows version all in one?

     Thanks,

    Bernard

    Hi,

So I spent some time looking at this and it seems the getUrl function in flash isn't supported in notebook on mac currently. Therefore there is no way to make this tool work for mac. I don't have access to a linux machine to see if it works there. Sorry about that.

Thanks Quentin for sharing it! I've found it very useful during presentations. Is there anyway you can make it using Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer?

     rwidjaya,

You sure can, you just need to make firefox your default browser. Follow the steps on this site to set it as your defualt browser:

Let me know if it works

    Hi Joe,

Firefox is my default browser, but when I use Quentin's flash object it uses the Internet Explorer to search the URL. So...I don't know what to do.

    Thanks,

    Rae

Ok, thats odd then, if it's set up as your default browser then it should load in firefox. When you have a normal link to a website from a notebook page and you click on it to load, what browser does it load in?

Glad to here that this little widget is useful to others.  I will add a few skins in the near future.

Not sure about that IE issue with regards to the default browser.  It was scripted to open in the default web browser.  Will take a look.

     Take Care,

    Quentin

Re: Web Page Browsing from Within Notebook

     Rae,

can you try the test browser I put here:

If you right click this link and choose Save as. Then change the save name to "browser.swf" instead of "download.aspx", then drag the browser into notebook and try it out, does it open in firefox or IE?

This browser will also save the last website you typed in when you reload the file.

Let me know if it works and if so I'll pass the function to quentin who can update his file

    Thanks
